10 Sewing & Craft Storage Ideas

Sewing & Craft Room Storage Ideas

We all know our sewing or craft room can become a real mess when we are engrossed in a new project!  We are soon covered in threads or find pins on the floor and have mountains of sewing and craft notions, fabrics and yarns around us.  Personally I see that as a sign of having fun - as a tidy craft room often means it's not being used in my opinion!

But in all seriousness, we would all love to sort out our craft rooms and be more organised, as we can't keep shutting the door and ignoring the mess haha!

So we've collated a handy little blog post with 10 creative sewing and craft storage ideas that you can perhaps incorporate into your craft room, to give you some peace and calmness before starting your next project!

1) Pegboards

I have a love/hate relationship with peg boards.  They can be so handy to hang up your scissors and sewing accessories etc but I'm not a huge fan of having things on display (for hubby or kids to steel my best dressmaking scissors!) But if this isn't a problem for you, hanging a pegboard above your craft desk is a great way to gain space. It is ideal to hang tools like scissors, threads, rulers, and other frequently used items. It's a great solution to keep everything within arm's reach and can create an organised & fun display in any craft room.

2) Drawer Dividers

It is so easy to lose some of your craft supplies. Having a handy cabinet with drawer dividers is a great & simple way to organise small sewing supplies like pins, needles, buttons, and thread spools. Clear dividers make it easy to see what you have at a glance and help keep things in a designated place so you can easily find them.

3) Craft Cart

Owning a portable craft cart on wheels is perfect for storing items while still being mobile. You can easily move it around your desk or cutting table as and when it is needed, and it offers compact storage.

4) Jars

Storage jars are a cute and functional way to store smaller sewing or craft notions. You can repurpose jars for things like pins, buttons, thread, beads, quilting clips or even tools like seam rippers. Plus, they make for a charming display on shelves or tables. It is also fun to make the lid of jars into a functional pin cushion - a great little scrap buster project!

5) Fabric Display

If you have a decent sized fabric stash, consider displaying your fabrics on fabric bolts made from foam board, cardboard or wood dowels. Comic Book Cards are often used for this.  This will help you keep fabrics neatly folded and visible, so you’re not rummaging through piles of fabrics. You can also then display or store your fabrics by colour or theme which can look very pretty and will also entice you to want to sew if you have a lovely display of beautiful fabrics calling your name! Alternatively, you could use a nice old fashioned cabinet or haberdashery cabinet to store and/ore display your fabrics or quilts.

6) Sewing/Craft Box

A portable sewing or craft box can store your essential sewing and craft supplies in one place, making it easy to grab. Look for ones with multiple compartments and even a handle for easy carrying. I also love a little desk caddy for my 101 dressmaking scissors, embroidery scissors & rotary cutters and also own a few heirloom sewing boxes which I cherish and love to use regularly.

7) Over-the-Door Hanging Organiser

An over-the-door shoe organiser can serve as an excellent solution for storage. You can use it to store threads, patterns, fabric scraps, yarns & knitting needles or crochet hooks, utilizing space you wouldn’t otherwise think to use.

8) Spool Holder Stand

A thread rack or spool holder mounted to a wall, stored in your storage cabinet or mounted on your desk can really help keep your thread organised by colour and type. This makes it easy to grab the right thread when you’re in the middle of a sewing project. It’s also a great way to display all your thread colours.  It is also great to have multiple thread colours in your stash so you can sew up any sewing project in the correct colour. We sell a lovely selection of Gutermann threads in a lovely sewing thread gift box which is a must for any sewing room.

9) Clear Plastic Baskets with Labels

Clear plastic bin boxes are ideal for storing fabric, notions, and other craft supplies. Labelling each bin allows you to quickly identify what's inside them without having to open each one, and they stack easily for space-efficient storage. These acrylic bins/baskets are easily available in most supermarkets or online these days. I’ve even bought fridge bins before which also do the trick nicely and are often bigger too.

10) Vintage Sewing Cabinet Storage

If you’re a fan of vintage finds, consider repurposing an old sewing cabinet. These often have built-in drawers and compartments that are perfect for organising all your sewing tools and materials while also adding character to your craft space.

Check out our beautiful haberdashery cabinet in our store at Sewcialising in York! It was the very first thing I bought for the shop and it’s always a talking point when customers come in. It also stores an incredible amount of things! Please do shop around on Facebook Marketplace and Auction Houses are they are harder to come by these days!

These ideas not only help organise your sewing or craft room but can also give it a personalised touch, making your sewing space both functional and visually pleasing.

Not everyone has the luxury of having a designated sewing space, but ensuring you store all your sewing and craft items whilst not in use can also be beneficial.  You don't want all your sewing and craft items scattered in every room around your home.  Keep things simple and all together if possible, so if you decide to sew or craft, you can easily grab your machine and tools and start straight away!
